Very likely, it is voLTE. You can get faster connection and better voice quality if both are using voLTE. You will get better voice quality and faster connecting. If you want to completely dismiss the icon, you need ask your carrier to disable voLTE services. They may make it as HD voice or cIear voice or something else.

Yes, it may be too small for some users. But unfortunately, there are no ways to make it bigger because the height of status bar is fixed in all Android devices.
